What's To Come

With the New Year approaching we have been discussing future plans for the Drum It With Brummet blog, and have come up with some fantastic projects - some of which Dave is proud to share with you below:

What's To Come:

Over the many years of teaching drums and percussion my students have asked many mechanical questions regarding this complicated instrument we play. As well as the playing aspect, there is so much to consider when you are out playing gigs on a regular basis. Whether it is a broken part or something gone missing, or worse -  stolen, there is always something you need to be prepared to fix in a pinch.

Having been in the music business for over 40 years, playing both live and studio gigs I happen to have gained quite a bit of trickery when it comes to on-the-spot fixes and customizing.

Part of my drum business, other than teaching, is repairing and customizing hardware as well as advising school bands and maintaining their instruments. I also manufacture a line of accessories for conga players and percussionists.

From these experiences I have compiled a series of articles addressing the hardware and mechanical side of drum sets and percussion. Hopefully it will give you an idea of what to do to keep your own gear in top shape for playing and what to do to avoid breakdowns and embarrassing glitches mid-performance.

Look forward to upcoming articles on the following topics:

  • Racks and stands – maintenance, customizing and sound proofing for recording.

  • Proper bass drum leveling – save your equipment and yourself from damage.

  • Snare strainer tips – get the best sound out of that noisy little strip of wires.

  • Tuning concepts –great sounding drums using your ears – not an expensive gadget.

  • First aid for drums – know what to look for and what to bring to avoid disasters.

  • Memory locks – they can be your friend, or just get in the way. Learn the difference.

  • Hardware customizing – how to get creative with those extra pieces and parts.

  • Drum carpet – an important item you should invest in as a gigging drummer.

  • Drum trash – how to repurpose broken cymbals, sticks and hardware.
