You can also obtain it in hardcover, e-book or paperback formats on Amazon: Rainbow In The Dark
It is a memoir of his earliest music memories as a child playing a horned instrument and how this lead to developing the strength he needed later on as a singer. I learned so much about this "New York guy" living in Los Angeles with a close affinity to the British and a passion for the medieval era. Ronnie tells about the early band experiences and then delves right into his experiences working with world-famous bands - Rainbow, Black Sabbath and his own band Dio.
He speaks about the incredible, life-long drive to write amazing songs, to sing with his best voice, to give his fans memorable experiences... mentoring young musicians.
"To be in one world-famous band is a rare victory, most musicians can't hope to achieve. To somehow find yourself in 2 world-famous bands is almost being greedy. But to find yourself being a success for the 3rd time, especially when it is with your own band this time well, I consider myself extremely fortunate."
~ Ronnie James Dio (Rainbow In The Dark)
Ronnie is very honest and frank about where you have to draw the line for protecting your self as an artist, of interpersonal issues that happen in bands, how the situations surrounding success can sometimes destroy the artist, and how to avoid personality clashes that can slowly fray apart a band. He speaks of how finding the love of his life - Wendy, his wife - changed him completely, giving him the faith in himself, stabilizing his world and having a partner who genuinely understood and worked within the music industry.
He also shared experiences of overcoming incredible odds in the industry simply with hard work, and a consistent dedication to creating a memorable experience with his fans.
At times he put everything on the line, remortgaging his home to support Dio in the early days. This dedication to hard work, belief in one's self, and determination is so very inspiring.
I definitely enjoyed the entertaining stories of his early family years in the Italian neighbourhood with their traditions and fascinating names (there's a story here, but I won't spoil it). I sometimes felt like I was almost there with him watching the experiences ... being on the road, recording in different situations, risking everything, financing and marketing his band Dio... and so much more
Musicians will certainly get a lot out of this book, more than entertaining - this book will help you in your career in so many ways. It is also an incredible tribute to this talented man who changed the music industry and helped an array of young musicians later on in life.
I highly recommend this audio book. It's a long one - at 8 hours - so be sure to pause it so that you can come back to hear the rest as you have time. Alternatively, visit Amazon to see the other formats this book comes in.
