Drum Rudiments

* Written by David Lopez who invites you to visit DrumsPlayerWorld.com

Playing the drums does not only require you to have a drums set and a pair of drums sticks to be able to create music, you also need to learn the drum rudiments that will enable you to create music via certain patterns of drumming. These rudiments are needed in order to create a certain musical piece. If chords are the ones used for the guitars and the keyboard, rudiments are the ones used for drumming.

Rudiments are the different patterns that you need to learn in order to be able to create music via the drums. There are various patterns that you get to combine in order to fully make a musical piece. The following are the general rudiments that you need to learn in order to create music: the single stroke, the double stroke, the diddle, the paradiddle, the drag, the flam, and the roll. They are defined as the following:
  • The single stroke is done by a single percussion note.

  • The double stroke is made via doing two single strokes by the same hand.

  • The diddle is actually a double stroke played out during the dominating speed of the musical piece.

  • The paradiddle is done via doing two single strokes and then following it with a double stroke.

  • The drag is a done via a double stroke that is made at twice the exact speed of the specified time in which it is being used in the piece.

  • The flam is actually done by doing two single strokes by alternating hands and is made to sound as a single wider note.

  • The roll is a techniques of different kinds that are made in order to produce a longer sound.

In order to successfully play the drums, you need to familiarize yourself first with these different rudiments and their different variations. In that way, you will be able to make different patterns in order for you to create a full musical piece. These rudiments are especially needed to be learned especially when you really want to learn how it is to play the drums correctly and musically.

As with the chords being the different set of keys or strings that one needs to learn in order to play the guitar or the keyboard, the rudiments are the basic patterns that you also need to learn in order to play the drums. In that way, you can be able to continuously learn how it is to play the drums and be able to create different musical pieces with drum playing.
