Hustle Harder, Hustle Smarter

Hustle Harder, Hustle Smarter

Today I'd like to discuss the audio book Hustle Harder, Hustle Smarter - by Curtis Jackson https://youtu.be/zKEUKTxFomE

To be perfectly honest, I've never been drawn to the hip hop or rap genre of music although a song or two from that genre have a place in the long list of music I've enjoyed.

I was browsing YouTube audio books for something interesting to listen to while I completed mundane chores around the office and studio... and found this incredible piece of work put out by Curtis Jackson.

Curtis - for those of you who don't know - made it in music as a rap megastar, known as 50 Cent, but also branched out into the corporate world investing in businesses and mentoring young music talent entering the stream.

I became addicted to listening to the man explain, in his own voice, his adventurous life from surviving in childhood, like everyone else in his world - by peddling drugs on the street. Through tenacity and talent alone he strove to become a megastar on film and in the music industry, as well as achieving success in business.

In this book, Curtis exposed many deep issues behind the scenes - such as leaving the streets and many of the people he once knew behind because he couldn't take it with him on his way to the top. That meant letting go of people who were still stuck in the mindset of being on the street - getting instant pay back, or stealing or doing drugs.

He makes a special point to explain to let go of "what should be" and to embrace "what is", learning how to deal with studio executives, how to stand up for artistic work, but also be willing to do what it takes to make it happen.

One point in particular that stays with me still was when he was first starting out and trying to gain a large enough following to get to the next level. Instead of being upset at the people selling his music on the street corner, even though it wasn't on the shelves yet, he actually supported them by purchasing some of their products. He said he didn't tell them who he was. He was actually glad they were doing this - he felt that here he had a free team of marketers on the street directly peddling his work and spreading his reach. His return on investment came with increased numbers coming to his gigs and various events. Eventually he gained enough of a following to get to the next level in the music industry.

The business expertise and personal development tips that he shares throughout, is incredibly inspiring. He was so honest, so exposed in the book  - which was very touching and made me feel more connected to the journey.

I felt his flexibility, his willingness to look for the approach - the angle that would get him where he wants to go. When an obstacle approached, he looked for an alternative path.

Listeners will definitely benefit from listening to the author share his book. You'll get an insider's view into corporate business, music executive offices, studio, being a successful musician, breaking into film and trying to come to terms with family life as well. Such a great tale... don't miss out on it. At 8 hours, the audio book might seem a little long but it is easy to pause it or make a note of the time where you last stopped it - and is worth every minute.
