The legends of technique

https://youtu.be/LPec5QvXbHk?si=vdCRZ3NAJdaTAqgn This is a great interview with the ambassador of drumming. We lost Dom Famularo in 2023 but his words live on and continue to inspire the young drummers coming up. His comment on how when using George Stone's freestroke technique: "we aren't controlling the stick we are guiding it" makes so much sense. This interview is full of some fascinating history of drums and the music industry. ~~~     Follow the Brummet's on:   Amazon Visit Their Blogs:   Brummet's Conscious Blog Drum It With Brummet Blog Subscribe (for free):   Brummet Media YouTube Channel   ~~~

Join in the next drum circle

Drum It With Brummet's Public Hand Drum Circles  July 29th (Tuesday)  7 PM - 9  PM (Pacific) This 2-hour e vent is held monthly, and is for all skill levels and are a lot of fun for ages 15 -80. Bring your own drum, or percussive instrument, but  if you do not have a drum - let us know as we do have a limited supply that we are able to let participants use for events like this.   Drum Circle  participants simply "play” at making music with a variety of drums and percussion instruments. This activity requires careful listening to the music at that moment, as it is being played by members in the room. Rather than being instructed, participants learn to "jam" with other drummers.  Dave Brummet facilitates these events to ensure everyone is comfortable, playing at an enjoyable volume and having a great time. Held in a beautiful setting in Downtown Creston, BC - this specially designed music room features large, soft, padded seats in an air-con...

Zawinul Syndicate Live

Today we have the honour of sharing yet another recommended music video for you to enjoy. The Zawinul Syndicate Live at the North Sea Jazz Festival (1997).  Here we get to witness Paco Sery on drums and Manolo Badrena on percussion.  I had heard of  these two for years, but until now had never seen them perform.  Wow!  All I can say is these guys are having a lot of fun at their jobs and the musicians they are with definitely benefit from it.  Amazing musicianship all around. ** RIP Joe Zawinul (1932-2007) https://youtu.be/cZeDgilYrFU?si=y08XnhJN0Fw5yeTZ ~~~     Find our Books:   on Amazon Subscribe:   Brummet Media YouTube Channel   ~~~

Rack Ring

Rack Ring Ever noticed that metallic “ping” sound that resonates from your drum rack? Most of us don’t so try not to panic. A majority of drum rack systems have a hollow metal tube as the main part of the structure.  Those tubes can resonate with every hit to the drum or cymbal that is attached to it. It is very subtle but it can be an issue when recording with close micing techniques.  I tried to devise a way to alleviate this extra noise and have come up with an easy and affordable solution – noodles! Yes, those colorful foam pool noodles that you buy at the toy store are the solution. I simply cut them lengthwise into sizes that fit just slightly snug into the inside of each tube so it contacts the metal around it. It has the same effect as if you grabbed the metal tube with a soft gloved hand.  Suddenly all the extra ring is soaked up by this lightweight (and invisible) slice of a kids toy. You can fill the full length for maximum deadening but I usually do len...

Recommended Video

This next recommended video is a performance featuring Sting and Stevie Wonder performing an interesting medley of  Higher Ground  and  Roxanne .  Stevie and Sting are well known for surrounding themselves with exceptional musicians, and this performance only confirms this.  https://youtu.be/QsaWoSq-OBo?si=vZdfXdDkm7u9DTyX Sadly, we are not able to see much of the rhythm section, except for the flying, blurry sticks in the background. It's disappointing only in that the percussionists are exceptional and we would have loved seeing them in action. However, in this case listening is enough...  ~~~     Find our Books:   on Amazon Subscribe:   Brummet Media YouTube Channel   ~~~

Answering Your Q's

Answering Your Q's Have a question that you'd like Dave to respond to?  Feel free to send it our way - The ABOUT page shares our guidelines and contact info.  Q: Donavan asked:  " Over the years that you've been in the music industry have you witnessed many changes?"  I came into playing drums in a rock and roll cover band in the mid 1980’s.  It was the time when you could see a band at almost every bar, pub or restaurant in town on any given night – or day!  Cigarette smoke filled as they were, they were places to enjoy live music of all genres and types.  I witnessed a definite dive in the industry in the early 90’s when tobacco was restricted in public places.  It seemed if customers couldn’t smoke while having a beer and enjoying some live music they stayed home more often.  The bar and club music scene withered, somewhat, due to the poor profit margin of the owners.  The paying rate for the musicians went down and so, unfort...

Recommended Video

https://youtu.be/Urh0AmE0yGw?si=CZW2h10oq5T4xCWi This performance by Glass Beams was recorded live at the Bitterzoet in Amsterdam in 2024.  We are enthralled by the vibrant, energetic performances by these three very talented musicians. Australian multi-instrumentalist Rajan Silva is the bass player and leader of the band, while the other two members go curiously unnamed. The drummer is very classy, simplifying as required utilizing a small but effective hybrid drum kit. The guitar player tastefully uses multiple effects pedals to round out the sound. The fact that they all wear gold bejewelled glass masks adds a theatrical mystique that draws  the audience in to better focus on the music.  There are no lyrics and they don't talk to the audience... but somehow in doing this they require that one listens all the more.  It is a blend of tribal, funk, rock, middle Eastern, trance that takes listeners on a different musical journey;  hypnotizing & infec...
