Rhythmic Chameleon

In my drumming career there has been many instances where my job was to be what I call a Rhythmic Chameleon on the drums - able to adjust and change to the environment I was playing for, or in.  Initially it developed when I was working in studios. Often a drum machine track that the client had created (and to which they were attached) needed replacing, but on a kit with a human feel. This was my forte as I could do it faster than it would take me or the engineer to reprogram it on a machine. I soon developed the ability to analyze/learn different styles quickly and emulate them. This skill also led to me what is known as ghost work - anonymously replacing another drummers track that wasn’t working out for a recording project. I was required to play exactly as they had and often without anyone but the songwriter or producer and engineer knowing.  I was paid extra to keep my mouth shut. There is no shame in this for the original drummer. After all, I was emulating their part t...

This video showcases one of the best Stevie Wonder performances of MasterBlaster .  The 1995 recording is of a very special, intimate event where  Stevie gives a rare studio concert at London's Teddington Studios following the release of his Conversation Peace album. You'll notice the song has a strong percussion & drum sound, and if you watch the percussionist - man, that dude is really working it! The musicians are a tight group, really in groove with each other.  https://youtu.be/ZreAq0beEfM?si=scwnTyEEwGQ4taW5 ~~~     Find our Books:   on Amazon Subscribe:   Brummet Media YouTube Channel   ~~~

Drummer's Sage

Drummer's Sage " Another great obstacle to the relaying of drum messages over great distances is  the fact of the tribal nature of most drum languages.  Since the drum language is based on the tribal tongue it is usually understood only  by members of the tribe.  There is no "international" drum language in Africa any more  than there is a  common spoken language. ..So that at the boundary of the tribal group sending out a message  there would be a check in transmission.  This check could only be overcome if a drummer were available  who understood the drum language of his own,  and of the neighbouring tribe.  Such men do occur in boundary villages. Children of parents who come from two different tribes  often learn both languages and become bilingual on the drum.  But they are not numerous  and this fact makes it difficult to relay a drum message  across the boundary of the tribe.  Thus, many of the ...

Fast Hands

If you have ever wanted to increase the speed of your single stroke rolls check out this video by Camellia Akhamie Kies.  https://youtu.be/aTWObUqFNlU?si=i8sUvK8vDotla4kN She explains and demonstrates a simple method to get amazing speed out of your hands.   As a bonus she also shows how to work the muscle groups involved by flipping the sticks around and playing against your forearm.  I now use this method for warming up prior to performing as it is silent, doesn’t require a practice pad and is very effective in waking up my hands and arms.  I only wished that I had discovered this technique decades ago as it may have saved some wear and tear on my hands and arms. ~~~     Find our Books:   on Amazon Subscribe:   Brummet Media YouTube Channel   ~~~

This video of Jesse Cook's 7-piece band was recorded for the Walks of the Night DVD . This amazing concert showcases numerous guest performers and a couple of fantastic rhythm jam-out sessions.  https://youtu.be/6343H42j_YI?si=saM59KySr0dv_zjL The second link we are sharing today is Jesse's Closer To Madness - One Night At The Metropolis  (2007).   https://youtu.be/XvrkEWvr1ro?si=CC52zQaoVM4oCHlh There are numerous, powerful performers especially the one fellow who plays piano, violin, accordion, guitar, wind instruments and sings harmony as well.  The theatrical, artistic approach to the DVD video left us with the impression that Jesse was implying he was on stage alone in an empty theatre, and that the concert we just saw was all in his head.  The level of dynamics in these performances is amazing and Jess's guitar playing is something to witness. Another thing we noticed was the excellent sound quality, everything came through crystal clear i...

improve drum solos

Drum soloing – some drummers are very adept at them. When I was younger, I often felt like I just fell  on my drums when I am pushed to do one.  It was never a priority on my list of things to practice when  alone with my drums as I was usually busy working on songs to play in a cover band. Recently, we saw live music get a reboot after the COVID shutdown had people realizing how much  they missed seeing a live band in a club setting. The weekend rock band I was in at the time saw the  potential of this and put together a very energetic rock set list that had me playing harder and faster  than I had – ever! This group also required me to do a drum solo that I was dreading.  It had been  probably more than thirty years since I had done a long solo and, as you know, I had always disliked them. It’s not that I  don’t like drum solos that other guys do, in fact I love them - when done well. I just felt that  I wasn’t in that category probabl...
